Learn the essentials of selecting luxury vinyl to transform your space.

Luxury Vinyl Considerations:

Plank or Tile Size:

Luxury vinyl comes in various sizes and visuals. Longer, wider wood suits larger rooms but may overpower smaller spaces. Plank width ranges from 3 inches to a foot, with lengths from 24 inches to over 9 feet. Choosing the right size is crucial for the room's overall look.

Plank Thickness:

Vinyl plank flooring varies in thickness based on the core material. SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) is typically 3.5 to 7mm thick for increased durability, while WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) can reach up to 13mm, offering a softer and more luxurious feel underfoot.

Wear Layer:

Luxury vinyl floors feature a crucial component for performance: the wear layer. This factory finish wear layer, measured in mils (ranging from 6 to 22), enhances durability. Optimal performance is often associated with a 20-mil wear layer in high-quality luxury vinyl floors.

Installation:

Baker Bros recommends professional installation for a polished finish, but skilled DIYers can tackle Luxury Vinyl with proper tools and patience. Note: Floating floors require baseboard adjustments, and a moisture barrier is now required for concrete subfloors by manufacturers.

Budget:

Luxury Vinyl Floors provide excellent value, with material costs from $2.99/sq. ft to $6.99/sq. ft. Your total project estimate should account for furniture moving, flooring removal, subfloor preparation, moldings, etc. We offer comprehensive bottom-line estimates covering this.

Pros

  • Resilient: By definition, luxury vinyl floors are resilient and perform well over time. Plank thickness and wear layer play a significant role in this.
  • Comfortable: Because luxury vinyl is installed as a floating installation, the floor will have some “give,” creating a softer feel underfoot than other hard flooring surfaces.
  • Easy Maintenance: Light sweeping and light dust mopping can keep the floors looking great for a long time.
  • Pet Friendly: These floors are safe for pet accidents because they are water-resistant.

Cons

  • Limited Scratch Resistance: Dragging furniture or long pet nails can lead to noticeable scratches.
  • Not Dent-Proof: Heavy furniture can cause indentations, which may not recover independently.
  • Fade Susceptibility to Sunlight: While fade-resistant, continuous exposure to sunlight can lead to color fading, resulting in an uneven appearance over time.
  • Challenging Plank Replacement: Damaged planks are not easily replaceable due to the installation method, making the replacement process more complex and potentially costly.

Note: All in all, luxury vinyl plank flooring is an excellent choice for your home, but like anything else, the more you know, the better your expectations.

What are the different types of vinyl products?

There are vinyl products that come in sheets as well as plank or tile format. These products are all designed to imitate the look of hardwood, tile, or other natural type flooring. You will hear the phrases LVP (luxury Vinyl Plank) and LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) which are typically vinyl wear layers adhered to a base platform that allows for a glueless/floating installation. The same products are also made without the base and can be glued directly to the floor.

I heard something about SPC and WPC. What is the difference?

These are the core materials used in LVP and LV. SPC is a plastic composite core that has great rigidity and enhances the durability of the vinyl plank or tile. WPC is a wood composite, which adds a foaming agent into the core that makes it softer and warmer underfoot. WPC products are thicker and more luxurious than SPC products. Both cores will give you excellent performance in your home.

Are vinyl floors waterproof?

The manufacturers offer waterproof warranties on many of these products. Perhaps one of the biggest reasons for their popularity is the ease of maintenance once installed. No special cleaners are needed and while a lightly damp mop is recommended, a little heavier hand will not hurt the floor.

Are vinyl floors pet friendly?

YES. Due to their ease of maintenance and their high level of water resistance, pet issues can be cleaned and not damage the floor.

What’s the catch?

No floor is impervious to everything. There are things to be aware of. Vinyl floors are not scratch proof, and they are not dent proof either. Sliding heavy furniture or roller chairs may cause a problem. Heavy furniture will indent the floor over time. Chair pads and protectors are highly recommended. See your manufacturer’s warranty brochure for more information.

Do I need a pad underneath?

Many of these products come with some form of attached pad that serves its purpose. There are higher quality underlayments that can be installed underneath to add a more comfortable feel underfoot. Finally, most manufacturers require a moisture barrier be installed under the floor to protect any vapors that may be emitted by concrete slabs.

How do I clean luxury vinyl tile?

To clean luxury vinyl flooring, use a clean cloth for spills, rotating it to prevent stain spreading. Regular sweeping and doormats help prevent fading or discoloration. For deeper cleaning, use a manufacturer-recommended solution when mopping to maintain the floor's shine.

What is luxury vinyl made of?

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring consists of layers: wear layer (scratch and UV-resistant), image layer (textured appearance mimicking wood or stone), core layer (varies for durability), and backing layer (cork, fiberglass, or foam). Understanding these layers helps choose the right LVT.

How durable is luxury vinyl?

Durability is a top priority for homeowners seeking lasting beauty. Luxury Vinyl's superior wear layer ensures high durability, preserving the floor's appearance. Choose the appropriate wear layer based on factors like pets, kids, and foot traffic.

Is luxury vinyl expensive?

Contrary to expectations, luxury vinyl flooring is cost-efficient, even for larger spaces. It provides stunning alternatives to marble or hardwood at a fraction of the cost. Its durability against damage and moisture ensures a long-lasting investment, offering excellent value for your money.

Can I install luxury vinyl over existing floors?

Yes; upgrade your look by transitioning to luxury vinyl over existing hard surface floors. Seek assistance from professional flooring installers like Baker Bros for quality results without the stress or mess of a DIY approach.

What is underlayment in luxury vinyl?

The layer beneath luxury vinyl plank flooring is called "underlayment." Various vinyl floors have distinct underlayment requirements, influenced by factors such as installation location and the quality of the subflooring. Experts handle construction and cleanup tasks for a worry-free experience.

Can I use luxury vinyl in my bathroom?

Luxury vinyl is an ideal, cost-effective choice for bathroom floors. It's not just water-resistant but 100 percent waterproof, practical, and durable. The quick lock-and-click installation system simplifies the process, and its resistance to scratches and dents ensures long-term durability. Always check manufacturer warranties before using new floor cleaners.
